The must-have Point of Sale hardware equipment for attractions and cultural venues

Whether you’re running a small museum or a big amusement park, POS hardware equipment is essential to operate your business. Of course, your needs in terms of hardware might be different if you operate a single ticket office, multiple restaurants or a gift shop. Must-have Point of Sale hardware equipment checklist

Software interface or Station

The software interface will allow you to complete the sales process. It can be either touchscreen or with a keyboard to easily select products and enter data.

Printers

If you run a ticket office, you will probably need two different printers: a printer’s receipt and a printer’s ticket. The printer’s receipt is a must-have as it will print the proof of purchase for your visitors. For the printer’s ticket, a thermal printer is usually preferred for a nicer rendering of tickets.

Cash drawer 

The cash drawer is - as you probably understood it - where you store cash. It should be a safe and secure place during business hours. An integration between the POS software and the cash drawer is recommended to open automatically when a cash payment is selected.

Barcode scanner

The barcode scanner is used to scan the barcodes displayed on items. It is not necessary to  have one but it will help you gain a big amount of time and avoid human mistakes as if you were selecting items manually on the interface.  

Credit card terminal

The credit card terminal or credit card reader is the way that you can accept credit or debit card from an order placed on the POS. The payment terminal can be integrated to the POS making the sales process automatic and the checkout faster or it can be done manually. Modern payment terminals nowadays also accept NFC or contactless cards and other payment options such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Pay, etc.

Mobile device

Would you like your cashiers to be moving around your café or shop while making sales? Opt also for compatible mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets and smaller mobile card readers to allow more flexibility. 

Customer Facing Display (CFD)

The Customer Facing Display, usually a small screen, is the part of the POS that faces the customer. It displays very little information such as the ​​name and the price of the item, the tax amount, and the total price.

Kiosk or Self-Serve Kiosk

The self-serve kiosk is a point of sale device that allows customers to create their own orders and checkout without the need of a cashier. You’ve probably seen it at McDonald’s, Walmart or Disneyland parks as they started to incorporate kiosks to lower wait times at check-in/checkouts and increase basket sizes.
